Telecom minister Kapil Sibbal spoke to media that new version of Akash tablet is expected to be launched on Nov 11,2012 .
He also told that :” Hopefully on November 11, you will see the President talking to 20,000 students across the nation (who) will have their hands on Aakash 2.”
He told that new version will feature 1 Ghz processor, 4 hour of strong battery backup, capacitive touch screen and latest version of android which is Ice Cream sandwich.
The tablet price is expected to come down to around ” $ 35, which will be approx Rs 1500, with all the manufacturing and shipping cost included.
Sibbal also added that : “At the moment, we are actually formulating a Cabinet note for the manufacturing of five million Aakash tablets without any financial burden on the Ministry of Finance.”
The first version Akash was launched last year in October promising a low cost computing device to students, but due to certain controversy between IIT Rajasthan and manufacturer Datawind , project got failed and didn’t get momentum, people who ordered the Akash are still waiting it to be delivered.
We hope that Govt will have good shipping plan this time , so that device may reach to maximum number of students in limited time.
Datawind had won the tender last year for making and supplying the Akash tablet at $49 per unit, which will cost $35 to anyone after subsidized by govt.
